Doctoral grant for teachers
The doctoral grant for teachers is an initiative of the Dutch Ministry for Education (OCW). It creates the opportunity for teachers to do PhD research at a university. The grant aims to increase the number of teachers holding a doctorate. It is open to teachers in primary, secondary, further professional, higher professional and special education. A larger number of teachers holding a doctorate who are employed in the classroom increases the quality of education and strengthens the ties between universities and schools. The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) decides every year which ten teachers will receive the grant.
PhD in parttime
The grant enables teachers to do their PhD research in parttime as an external PhD. The employers of the selected teachers receive a grant to second their researching teacher for a period of four years on a 0.4 fte basis. Standard amounts apply for this based on an average salary for 0.4 fte.In addition to this, the selected teachers will receive a limited budget for travel and training costs.
Supervision
The Open Universiteit, with its experience in supporting adult students who study parttime and at a distance, is very well equipped to support teachers with a wish to do PhD research. Prof. dr. Paul A. Kirschner van CELSTEC and Dr. Frank de Jong of Stoas Hogeschool in Wageningen supervise the PhD research of drs. Hennie van Heijst.
