project end:
31 Dec 2012

The MAVSEL project aims at advancing in two directions, combining scientific and technological objectives.

  • Scientific objectives are related to acquiring new knowledge, elaborating models, devising and testing methods and techniques for analyzing, interpreting and acting on data generated in educational settings. Data mining and analysis will be used (1) to study new indicators or metrics, and to contrast existing ones and (2) to test which algorithms and machine learning techniques are useful for the interpretation of data produced in educational settings. These data will be complemented with direct observations of learner behaviour. Expected results are social filtering and algorithms for the visualization and analysis of data, which will be useful for tutors and interaction designers.
  • Technological objectives are aimed at producing an open and extensible software framework collecting all the results of the project. The framework will enable participant groups and other stakeholders to advance more effectively and efficiently in this field, and to expose the methods and techniques used, thus making research in the field more contrastable, providing insights for creating learning communities which employ social network tools.
