CELSTEC offers opportunities for PhD research. PhD candidates can be employed by CELSTEC, but CELSTEC also offers possiblities for extraneous PhD candidates.

Extraneous PhD candidates

Extraneous PhD candidates are no part of the CELSTEC staff, but their PhD research is supervised by a CELSTEC staff member. When you are interested in an extraneous PhD, please visit the website celstec.org/phd. There you'll find all the necessary information, including a selftest.
Watch the video: Riina Vuorikari about being an extraneous PhD candidate...

Employed PhD students

Whenever there are vacancies for employed PhD students, this is announced at this website. The announcement always includes a description of the research project.
PhD candidates have in general a four-year appointment and their primary task is to work on a doctoral dissertation. But taking a PhD also involves taking courses, participating in other CELSTEC projects and participating in a research community on a national and international level. In principle the candidates publish an article each year of the four year stint.

PhD research projects

PhD research projects form part of one of the three research programmes:

All research is conducted in English.
You'll find a list of current projects on this website.

Project funding

PhD projects at CELSTEC are financed:

  • by the OUNL itself
  • by Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO, a public grant organisation)
  • by other sources, most notably EU funds
  • by the students themselves or through grants or their employer (extraneous PhD students)

PhD guide

CELSTEC has written a PhD guide containing information on being a PhD candidate at CELSTEC. This guide is intended for individuals who seek to apply for a PhD position or who have recently started as a PhD candidate.
The PhD guide can be downloaded here.

Journal lists

Most of our current theses are based on a series of articles that have been published in selected journals. For all programmes we prefer that the publications are published in journals listed in the ISI. PhD candidates are all members of a research school accredited by the Royal Dutch Academy of Sciences (KNAW). Most candidates from the Learning & Cognition programme are members of the national ICO Research School, which also maintains an ICO extension list of journals for their research area. Those in the Learning Media and Learning Networks programme are members of SIKS though crosses are possible depending on the thesis topic.
