Saskia Brand-Gruwel professor Learning Sciences

The Board of governors of the Open Universiteit has appointed dr. Saskia Brand-Gruwel as professor Learning Sciences. The chair is positioned within the Education & Training Institute (E&TI) of CELSTEC. E&TI offers among other programmes a MSc Learning Sciences.

The Learning Sciences chair wants to contribute to the transformationof society into a knowledge society. In this society lifelong learning, personal development and knowledge sharing are the key. The internet is used more and more as a source of information. The investigation of this chair focuses on

• search strategies
• evaluation, selection and structuring of information
• integration of information found in different sources with pre-existing knowledge
• the presentation of results
• the way education in all this can be organized.  

This research finds itself on the intersection between cognitive psychology, learning sciences and information sciences. It is executed within the Learning & Cognition programme.

Education and Training Institute
As professor  Saskia Brand-Gruwel will be responsible for the education the  Education & Training instituut offers in the field of learning sciences and technology enhanced learning, such as the MSc programme. She will guarantee the connection between the educational and the research & innovation activities of CELSTEC. She will start new education and training activities, in cooperation with the four research programmes. For these activitities new, improved and innovative formats will be developed and evaluated, parting from the insights, theories and technologies resulting from CELSTEC research.
