Module 1 Theories and Concepts for Mobile Learning
Why should you care about the topic of mobile learning and what makes it a
unique opportunity for changing your learning and personal development
support in your organization? These questions will be answered in this module.
Current Trends and developments about the use of mobile devices, about
changing usage patterns of children and young adults, and about technology
developments will be presented. Furthermore the educational potential of
mobile devices will be presented with examples from different research projects
and different types of mobile learning support will be presented based on a
references model for mobile learning solutions. Additionally a short overview of
the theoretical foundations of mobile learning will be given.
Duration: 2‐4 hours,
Format, Tools: Powerpoint, Plenary Presentation
Prerequisites: ‐
Module 2: Instructional Design for the mobile learner support
Based on module 1 in this module several instruction designs for mobile learning
support will be presented. In a following step the participants should describe
their own target solutions with simple UML methods and scenarios. For the
presented scenarios and the described instantiations then templates should be
filled from the participants. The instructional designs and their instantiation
should clarify and work out clearly the added value of the mobile solution in
each individual case. The use case models, scenarios and designs should be
discussed in the group.
Duration: 2‐4 hours,
Format, Tools: Use Case Modelling, ReCourse IMS‐LD Editor, SLED Player,
Introduction Presentation than team work on workstations with tooling
Prerequisites: IMS‐LD knowledge good but not necessary
Module 3: Content Management for Mobile Learning, and HCI for Mobile
Applications
Content is King, also for mobile devices with good content the applications often
tend to get boring and get fewer acceptance from the end users. One main
problem that will be discussed in this module is the design and development of
content especially for mobile devices, the integration and conversion of existing
content for mobile devices, the semi‐automatic or automatic conversion of
mobile content. The module will be a mix of hands on practice with simple
examples and a conceptional view on the topic. Furthermore the module will
give an introduction on key concepts of HCI on mobile devices.
Duration: 2‐4 hours,
Format, Tools: Authoring Tools for Mobile Content, Content conversion tools,
Prerequisites: Content Standards and previous experience with mobile apps.
Module 4: Developing applications for mobile devices
In this module the development of a mobile applications will be described that
uses locations based services, access to webservices, creating user content on
mobile devices. The participants can develop variations of the applications
template if programming knowledge in Java or ObjectiveC is existing.
Duration: 2‐4 hours,
Format, Tools: iPhone Software development kit, Android development kit
Prerequisites: Java and Objective C knowledge.
Module 5: Integrating with other solutions
In this module an integrated learning solutions should be presented and
discussed based on a standard LMS platform moodle. Particpants should
experience an integrated solutions from different roles, perspectives and
distributed task work. The solutions will combine key elements of filed trips with
GPS related, task and question integration with live conferencing and
cooperative distributed problem solving, and live communication.
Duration: 2‐4 hours,
Format, Tools: MOODLE customized, mobile devices, twitter
