Online serious games & simulations
Problem
Graduates do not only need to know about their domain, but need to keep themselves up to date on current knowledge and enable themselves to apply this in concrete situations. There is a need for innovative instructional designs, learning tasks and learning media that allows students to solve problems in authentic situations. For educational institutes it is hard to bridge between theories and the professional practises. Besides methods and learning materials that focus on experiential learning require considerable tutoring efforts and are expensive to develop.
Solution
Recently there have been promising experiences with the use of virtual, online field trips as a replacement of a real excursion or internship. These kinds of media applications are based on authentic case studies in which learning scenario’s are being deployed in a professional context allowing student to acquire professional competencies. In most cases the actual practise is simulated to allow for an effective learning experience. The learning media are identified with the term online serious games and simulations. The EMERGO method has been developed at CELSTEC, which allows for the design of state-of-the-art online serious games. In conjunction with the method we offer various services to make good use of the Open Source toolkit.
Result
In the one day workshop you get yourself acquainted with the EMERGO method and toolkit by exploring different demonstrators. You will be able to work on your own game with the support of our experts, resulting in the first version of a case allowing for authentic competency based learning,
